Robinhood Free Stock Not Showing Up? Every Reason and Fix

Illustration: Robinhood Free Stock Not Showing Up? Every Reason and Fix

Robinhood gives new customers a free stock worth $5 to $200 for opening an account and linking a bank. When it doesn’t show up, people usually assume the referral link failed or the offer ended. Usually neither is true. The stock depends on a short chain of conditions in Robinhood’s new-customer stock terms, and a missing reward almost always means one link in that chain isn’t finished yet, or never can be.

This article goes through the seven reasons in the order they tend to happen, says which ones you can fix, and ends with a checklist. All the timings come from Robinhood’s current terms, checked on the date at the top of this page.

What’s supposed to happen

It helps to know the full sequence, because the stock can only appear once every step before it is done:

  1. Apply for a Robinhood individual brokerage account.
  2. Get approved. Robinhood verifies your identity and your Social Security number.
  3. Link a bank account or debit card. You don’t have to deposit anything.
  4. Claim the reward and pick your stock from the 26 companies on offer (the two largest S&P 500 companies in each of 13 sectors).
  5. Wait for it to be credited, which the terms say happens within approximately one week of claiming.

After that, two holding rules apply. You can sell after 3 trading days, and you can withdraw the cash value 60 days after you claimed it.

One thing that surprises people: the free stock doesn’t depend on a referral link. Robinhood’s terms describe it as an offer for eligible new customers, and they say it runs alongside the referral program without being contingent on it. The link matters to the person who referred you, not to your stock. So “the referral link didn’t work” is almost never why the stock is missing.

Reason 1: Your account isn’t approved yet

The terms are explicit that rewards are only credited once the individual brokerage account is approved. Most applications are approved quickly, but some get held for extra checks, such as a request to upload ID or confirm your address. Until that’s resolved, there’s nothing for the stock to attach to.

The fix: open the app and look for any notice asking for documents or information, then provide it. Approval is the gate for everything else.

Reason 2: You haven’t linked a bank or debit card

This is the single most common reason. Linking a bank account or debit card to the individual brokerage account is the trigger for the offer. Approval alone doesn’t do it. A lot of people get approved, see a prompt to deposit, skip it because they don’t want to add money, and never link anything. The stock then never unlocks.

The fix: link a bank account or debit card. You don’t have to move any money. Linking is enough for your own stock.

Reason 3: You’ve had a Robinhood account before

The offer is only for people who have never previously had a Robinhood individual taxable brokerage account. That includes an account you opened years ago, never funded and forgot about, or one you closed. Robinhood ties accounts to your identity, so a new email address doesn’t make you a new customer.

The fix: there isn’t one. It’s one offer per person, ever. Opening a second account to get around it breaks the terms (they allow one individual investing account per client) and risks having both accounts restricted.

Reason 4: You opened a different kind of account

The reward is only credited to an individual taxable brokerage account. If the only thing you opened was a retirement account, such as a Robinhood IRA, the stock has nowhere to land. The same goes for linking your bank to some other product instead of to the brokerage account.

The fix: if you’ve never had an individual brokerage account, open one and link your bank to it. If you’re mainly interested in retirement accounts, our guide to the free stock vs the IRA match and deposit boosts explains how those promotions differ and which can be combined.

Reason 5: It’s waiting for you to claim it, or it was just claimed

The reward doesn’t add itself to your portfolio. Once you’re eligible, it waits in the app for you to claim it and pick a stock. If you’ve claimed it, the terms say it’s credited within approximately one week, and the timing can slip further if Robinhood decides to review the account.

Two smaller things can look like a missing reward. Robinhood says it occasionally runs out of inventory of a particular stock, in which case you’ll need to choose a different one. And at the typical $5 value, the reward is usually a fractional share, meaning a slice of one share, so it’s easy to overlook in a portfolio.

The fix: look for the claim prompt in the app and finish choosing a stock. If you’ve claimed it, give it a full week before assuming something is wrong.

Reason 6: You missed the 60-day claim window

Rewards that aren’t claimed within 60 days expire. This one catches people who signed up, got distracted, and came back two months later.

The fix: none once the window has closed. That’s why we tell everyone to claim on the day the reward appears.

Reason 7: The account isn’t in good standing

The terms require you to be a customer “in good standing”, and Robinhood can delay or withhold a reward if it sees signs of fraud or a terms violation. The terms don’t list every situation that counts, but a restricted account or an identity check that’s still being reviewed are the obvious candidates.

The fix: contact Robinhood support from inside the app. Be specific: give the date you were approved, the date you linked your bank, and the date you claimed, and include screenshots if you have them. Our guide on tracking pending referral rewards covers how to escalate a missing reward with evidence.

“It showed up, but I can’t take the money out”

That’s not a bug. The terms set two holding periods:

  • 3 trading days before you can sell. The stock is yours, but it’s locked for the first few trading days.
  • 60 days before you can withdraw the cash value. You can sell and buy something else on Robinhood during that time, but the reward’s cash value has to stay in your account until 60 days after you claimed it.

It also counts as income for tax purposes, so it will show up on your year-end tax forms. We explain how in how referral bonuses are taxed in the US.

What about the person who referred you?

Under Robinhood’s Tiered Referrals Program terms, a sign-up only counts toward the referrer’s milestones once the new account is approved and funded. That’s separate from your stock. You get your stock without depositing. The referrer only gets credit if you deposit something. If someone sent you their link and you want them to get credit, a deposit of any amount does it. If you don’t, your stock is unaffected.

The checklist

Go through these in order and stop at the first “no”:

  1. Is your individual brokerage account approved? If not, finish whatever Robinhood is asking for.
  2. Have you linked a bank account or debit card to that account? If not, link one. No deposit is needed.
  3. Is this the first individual brokerage account you’ve ever had at Robinhood? If not, the offer doesn’t apply.
  4. Have you claimed the reward and picked a stock? If not, do it now, before the 60 days run out.
  5. Has it been more than a week since you claimed? If not, wait.
  6. Still nothing after all of that? Contact Robinhood support with your dates and screenshots.
