Robinhood Referral Program 2026: The New Milestones Explained

Robinhood replaced its referral program on September 1, 2026, and the new version pays very differently from what a lot of older coupon pages still describe. This article is about the side most of those pages skip: not the free stock a new customer gets for signing up, but what the person sharing the link earns, and under what conditions. If you’re the one with the link in your bio or your group chat, here’s what actually changed.

The new program resets everyone to zero

Robinhood’s Tiered Referrals Program terms say the referral count that drives these milestones started over at zero on September 1, 2026, at 9 AM PT. Any qualifying referral you earned under the prior referral offer stays valid and paid — the terms don’t claw back what you already received — but it doesn’t carry forward into the new tier count. Every participant starts the new program at referral number zero, counting only sign-ups that begin on or after that date and time.

That matters if you’d been sharing your link for months before the rebuild. A friend who signed up in August under the old program isn’t retroactively added to your new tier total, and a friend who was mid-signup when the switch happened only counts if they started after 9 AM PT on September 1.

The five milestones

The new program pays in stock, at five fixed thresholds, not a flat amount per friend:

Qualifying referrals Reward
1 $50
3 $150
10 $800
50 $4,000
200 $10,000

Robinhood’s terms are explicit that nothing is paid between these points, and nothing is prorated: referral number 2 earns $0 on its own, referral number 9 earns $0 on its own, and the payout only lands the moment your cumulative qualifying-referral count crosses one of the five thresholds above. If you want the mechanics of why a tiered structure behaves this way — and why standing one referral short of a tier is worth exactly as much as standing at zero — see milestone referral bonuses: why the tier math isn’t linear, which breaks down the step-function math in more detail.

The $15,000-a-year ceiling

Milestone rewards are capped at $15,000 per person, per calendar year. Once your cumulative milestone payouts for the year hit that number, Robinhood stops paying new milestone bonuses until the next calendar year starts — even if you keep referring people and keep crossing what would otherwise be new thresholds. Since the tier count itself reset on September 1, 2026, anything you earned earlier in 2026 under the old program doesn’t count against this cap; the cap tracks rewards paid under the new program specifically.

In practice, the cap only becomes relevant to someone pushing well past the 200-referral tier in a single year, since the five published milestones alone add up to exactly $15,000. Reaching all five in one calendar year uses the entire annual allowance.

What counts as a “Qualifying Referral”

This is the detail that actually decides whether a friend’s sign-up moves your count at all. Under the terms, a referral only becomes a Qualifying Referral once your friend:

  • Is a new customer who has never had a Robinhood individual brokerage account before,
  • Gets approved for an account,
  • Links a bank account or external debit card, and
  • Funds that account with a deposit greater than $0 that actually settles.

That last condition is the one people miss. A friend who signs up, gets approved, and links a bank account — but never deposits anything — doesn’t count yet. Robinhood’s terms also specify that a deposit which reverses or fails, including a failed ACH transfer, doesn’t satisfy the funding requirement either; the referral only counts once a deposit clears. Note that this is a different, and lower, bar than the deposit your friend might choose to make for their own reasons — the terms set no specific minimum beyond “more than $0.”

It’s worth separating this from your friend’s own reward. Their new-customer free stock, covered in Robinhood’s free stock: every reason it might not show up, only requires them to link a bank account — no deposit needed. Your milestone credit as the referrer requires one extra step from them: an actual settled deposit. A friend can fully claim their own free stock and still never trigger your referral credit if they stop short of funding the account.

Who’s excluded, and what “good standing” means here

The terms exclude a few categories of people from earning referral rewards at all: Robinhood Financial employees, securities industry professionals, and paid creators or affiliates currently under a promotional agreement with Robinhood (former paid promoters become eligible again 30 days after that arrangement ends). Both the referrer and the referred friend also need to be US residents.

Separately, you need an active Robinhood brokerage account in good standing to claim any reward you’ve earned. Robinhood doesn’t itemize every condition that falls under “good standing,” but a restricted account or an identity check still under review are the kinds of situations that can hold up a payout, independent of whether your referral count itself is correct.

Claiming and cashing out

The same holding rules that apply to the referred friend’s own stock apply to your milestone reward once it’s granted:

  • Claim within 60 days, or the reward expires.
  • Sell after 3 trading days from when the reward posts.
  • Withdraw the cash value after 60 days from when you claim it.

Robinhood also reserves the right to withhold, rescind, or liquidate a milestone bonus, or to void a referral entirely, if it finds evidence of fraud or abuse — the same clawback mechanism described generally in referral clawbacks: when programs take the bonus back. In a tiered program, voiding one referral can also drop your cumulative count back below a threshold, putting an already-paid milestone bonus back in question, not just the single referral involved.

If you were referring friends before September 1, 2026, your count restarted, but nothing you already earned was taken away. Going forward, the number that matters is qualifying referrals — friends who are approved, linked, and actually fund the account — not raw sign-ups. And the headline “$10,000” only applies at 200 of those, with four smaller, more reachable milestones on the way there.
